Writing Thursday, July 3, 2008 over the Atlantic Ocean
on our flight from Rome, Italy to Newark, NJ, USA

Our
dinner for the last night of the tour was special. Even though a
six-course meal of meat, rice, pasta, salad, some sort of fowl on
potatoes, and tiramisu was not that unusual anymore, the meal was
accompanied by professional opera singers who vividly demonstrated their
talent and their humor complete with audience participation. The evening
was quite enjoyable for all. Before dinner we made the requisite stop at
the Trevi Fountain. With about half the number of people there as we had
seen on our own a few nights before, the scene was a little less
frenzied and we were able to go to the edge of the fountain and throw in
our coins. The bus made one more special stop on our way back to the
hotel: in front of St. Peter's Square to see the Basilica lit up at
night. Our hotel was on the outside of town, so by the time we were
dropped off by the bus there were few options besides saying goodbye to
our Globus family and calling it a night. Most people were flying back
to the United States in the morning, but Dan and I had one more
adventure planned.
