An Evening Meal

Fortunately, we found a shopping mall and an Australian-type restaurant called Aarons that satisfied our appetites after such a busy day. We then set out to find the Wangfujing marketplace described in the guidebook.

Souvenir shops and shops and shops Squirmy Snacks

This is only half the length of stalls. The first area we found has many aisles of shopping for souvenirs and what appeared to be snacks on sticks. Upon closer inspection, we saw that they were scorpions . . . and that they were still alive! The locals liked watching us tourists squirm just as the raw food did.
Later we found a long strip of at least 50 stalls all selling food on sticks. It is raw in the trays and they put your order in a pot and cook it right there. Everything was the same, but there seemed to be no shortage of customers . . . or maybe they were just gawking in disgust like us.

This food market was near a high-end shopping district that glowed like Las Vegas. It was certainly an interesting contrast to the ancient sites we had seen earlier in the day. Gee, was that really just this morning?

Bright lights in a big city.
