Goodell notes meeting at gala
supporting Huntington's Disease
Society
NFL commissioner Roger
Goodell was among the many
celebrities who attended the 2011
Celebration of Hope Gala on
Wednesday night, an event that was
hosted by ESPN’s Chris Berman to
raise funds for the Huntington’s
Disease Society of America. Goodell
revealed at the event that he will
meet with mayor Jerry Sanders on
Thursday. “It is just to get an
update from the mayor on what is

A sweet come from behind
victory over the Kansas City Chiefs
quickly turned sour for the San
Diego Chargers on Monday night when
quarterback Philip Rivers fumbled a
snap that was just a play away from
setting up a likely game-winning
field goal. It was the most
disastrous of many bad moments for
quarterback Philip Rivers this
season. “I haven’t played perfect,”
Rivers said. “Not even close.”

Not even a bullet lodged
close to his heart or the two others
that were removed from his body has
kept Chargers running back Curtis
Brinkley from pursuing his dream.
Last Saturday, Brinkley was
activated off the Charges practice
squad to the team’s 53-man roster.
An accomplishment that went
virtually unnoticed by the media,
but not by his teammates. Brinkley
is a survivor who has beaten

The Chargers (4-1) don’t
need a reason to despise the New
York Jets (3-3). Twice as underdogs
(2004 and 2009 seasons) the Jets
have come into San Diego and knocked
them out of the playoffs. This
Sunday the Chargers travel to New
York and the game has all the
ingredients to be an emotional,
hotly-contested affair. Jets coach
Rex Ryan didn’t help matters when he
spoke with the San Diego media on
Wednesday. In 2007, Ryan

Gates may play against the Jets
San Diego Chargers tight end
Antonio Gates tore his right plantar
fascia in Week 6 of the 2010 season
while playing against the New
England Patriots. A year later he's
still struggling to get back on the
field. Following this week’s bye,
there are some indications Gates
will practice next week and play
against the New York Jets.
Accurately predicting exactly when
Gates will return is about as
difficult as reading tea leaves.

Native San Diego kicker is
finally living the dream
Chargers kicker Nick Novak
has deep roots tying him to the
Bolts. His teenage idol was former
Chargers kicker John Carney
(1990-2000). “San Diego loves
Carney,” Novak said. “I grew up in
San Diego watching him. I was born
here in 1981 in Del Cerro. Kellen
Winslow’s (Chargers TE, 1979-87) son
and I have the same godmother.”
However, Novak freely admits that
his first love was soccer and

Running back Ryan Mathews
was selected in the first round of
the 2010 draft, but he only saw
limited action during his rookie
season because he missed six games
due to a high ankle sprain. When he
did play he struggled with pass
protection and with ball security as
he had five fumbles with three lost
at critical moments. “Last year
things were going a hundred miles an
hour,” Mathews said. “I was trying

Weddle and Spikes are leading

The Chargers defense held
quarterback Donovan McNabb to only
39 passing yards in the season
opener. However, quarterback Tom
Brady threw for 423 yards and three
touchdowns against the Chargers last
Sunday. Head coach Norv Turner
reacted to the poor performance by
saying his defense needs to do a
better job of communicating and
working together. His players agree.

Injuries to Castillo, Kaeding

The San Diego Chargers 24-17
win over the Minnesota Vikings on
Sunday came at a heavy cost. Kicker
Nate Kaeding tore a ligament in his
left knee and was placed on the
season-ending injury reserve list.
Defensive end Luis Castillo broke
the tibia in his left leg and will

Bisaccia takes unique approaches
For many years outstanding
play on special teams was a major
component of the San Diego Chargers
success. However all of that changed
a year ago. Last season the Chargers
special teams posted one of the
worst performances in the history of
the NFL. The kick return coverage
unit allowed three kickoffs and a
punt to be returned for a touchdown
in addition to Mike Scifres’ four
blocked punts. Special teams
coordinator Steve

Will the Bolts repeat as NFLs

“You Can’t Run!” It wasn’t
so long ago Chargers fans took pride

defense has been inconsistent. Last
year, however, San Diego had a very
respectable fourth best run defense.
Now there are signs Chargers fans

BALL SECURITY NO. 1 CONCERN:
Coach Norv Turner identified
improved ball security as the team's
chief priority at the start of camp.
In Turner's estimation, untimely
turnovers were the primary reason
the Chargers failed to reach the
postseason last year. "In our first
seven games [in 2010], we turned the
ball over 18 times and we didn't
create very many turnovers," Turner
said. "If you are going to be a good
